Licensed Practical Nurses provide to individuals and groups nursing care requiring the application of basic knowledge of the biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences at the direction of a licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist, or registered nurse.

Responsibilities include administering medications and treatments such as:

bulletTaking vital signs, i.e., temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration 
bulletTreating bed sores 
bulletPreparing and giving injections 
bulletApplying dressings 
bulletInserting catheters
bulletCaring for tracheostomies 

They also help patients with bathing and personal hygiene, keep them comfortable, and care for their emotional needs. Some assist in the delivery, care, and feeding of infants. Others help registered nurses with patients in intensive care units or in post-operative recovery rooms. In Ohio, LPNs may give prescribed medications.
