What is an LPN?

Licensed Practical Nurses...

...provide to individuals and groups nursing care requiring the application of basic knowledge of the biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences at the direction of a licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist, or registered nurse.

Responsibilities include administering medications and treatments such as:

  • Taking vital signs, i.e., temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration
  • Treating bed sores and other wounds
  • Preparing and giving injections, oral medications, and IV therapy
  • Applying dressings
  • Inserting catheters
  • Caring for tracheostomies

They also help patients with bathing and personal hygiene, keep them comfortable, and care for their emotional needs. LPNs practice in a variety of settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, outpatient settings, home care, and occupational health.
